Which 5 Workout Songs Get You “Pumped Up”?

September 11, 2007

Hey…I want to know your top 5 workout songs that you are listening to today! Yep…I would love for you guys to put your list down in the “comment” section. I’m just curious to see what everybody is listening to that gets them ready to hit the gym and workout hard.

workout music

For the record, I’m open to anything with a beat when I workout. I’m a Seattle guy and in this city alternative rock or techno is really big. There are certainly other types of clubs mixed in, but the “hip” crowd here mainly listens to techno or house music.

The nice thing about techno is that it has a fast pace to it, so it is great music to listen to when you are doing cardio. I like R&B also, but it normally has to be some sort of remix for me to be able to workout to it. I can’t really get into hardcore “hip hop”, although I know it gets a lot of guys and girls pumped up for working out…and that is all that really matters.

The one type of music that I think would be extremely tough to workout to would be country. I think it would slow me down (and annoy me). If you do like country, that is cool…make sure you list which songs get you pumped up. I live downtown, so I never ever hear country…maybe it’s good stuff?

Here is My “Top 5” List…With Videos

1) Daft Punk “One More Time” A classic dance/techno song that crossed over into the main stream. I fell in love with this song again, once I saw a video of their most recent tour. This tour has been called one of the best live shows of the decade. Watch this whole video to see the ridiculous energy of the crowd (about 2 1/2 minutes into this they switch things up and the crowd goes nuts)!

2) Dj Tiesto ft. Kane “Rain on Me” This song has incredible vocals and a great beat. DJ Tiesto is widely known as the top DJ in the world. He isn’t quite as well known in the U.S. as he is in other countries. In places like Europe and South America, he can easily pack in 30,000+ to one of his shows. He is the “Rock Star” of DJ’s for sure!

3) Ferry Corsten “Fire” Love this song! Can’t get enough of it. It’s been out for a while, but I like it better every time I listen to it. It has a nice “clean” and smooth sound for a techno song. If the vocals sound familiar it’s because it is Simon LeBon from Duran Duran.

4) Fedde Le Grande “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit”…Note…if you are offended by women in skimpy clothes, please don’t watch this video (the funny thing is now everyone will watch this…LOL!)

5) Justin Timberlake “My Love…Paul Oakenfold Remix” I’m not a huge Justin Timberlake fan, but I do think he is extremely talented. Paul Oakenfold is awesome at adding beats to improve a song. I really love this version and I have a hard time listening to this without bobbing my head. Great stuff!

I’ve got a favorite. I don’t like Eminem, or rap for that matter, but I can’t get enough of the song, “Lose Yourself”, while running or working out.

I can’t explain it but I’ve listened to that song thousands of times and it just doesn’t get old!

Jennifer September 11, 2007 at 10:24 am

I notice one of your listed songs is a Justin Timberlake (I’m not a huge fan overall either). I actually bumped into Justin Timberlake in a spa in Toronto a couple of weeks ago. I think he was in Canada for a concert. I was walking around a corner from the washrooms and he was walking down a hallway from the gym. I was wearing a white bath robe, and stepped on his toe!

I have an iPod nano jam-packed with different types of music, from rap to rock and everything in between. When I really want to get pumped to run hard I usually listen to the following:

Buttons – The Pussy Cat Dolls
Choke Me Spank Me (pull my hair) – Xzibit
Crazy B**** – Buckcherry
Lit up – Buckcherry (for some reason music with references to cocaine really make me run like the wind!…don’t know why)
No Hay Igual (club mix) – Nelly Furtado

That’s my list of five…strange mix perhaps, but it gets me going!

Tyler Durden September 11, 2007 at 10:28 am

Since don’t bring an i-pod to the gym i can’t listen to the music i want. But i would have some idea hat to listen to:
Madonna- Hung up, Jump
DMX- Party up (i know it’s hip-hop but a energetic one), X gonna give it to ya
Filo& Perry feat Fisher- Closer now (trance)
Kyau&Albert- Falling Anywhere(Rework) (trance)
Marc Van Linden- Forbidden love (trance)
Whiteroom feat Amy Cooper- someday (trance)
Camille Jones- the Creeps – i think it’s a great one
Timbaland -The way i are

Rusty September 11, 2007 at 12:45 pm

Very good lists so far!

Scott: Yeah…sometimes certain songs just click

Jennifer: That is crazy you ran into Justin Timberlake! As far as celebrities go, he is about as big as you get right now. Very cool. You gotta a little bit of Rock in there mixed with some hip-hop R&B dance stuff…that is a great variety.

Tyler: I don’t always bring an I-pod to the gym sometimes I just listen to good music before I workout. I like the ability to talk to people when I workout, so I can tell them when they are acting like tards…LOL! I like “The Creeps” as well…got some funky old-school techno sounds going on.

Jackson September 11, 2007 at 2:54 pm

Primus -(multiple songs)
2Pac – (multiple songs)
Hank III – (multiple songs)
Sex Pistols – (multiple songs)
Tom Waits – Goin’ Out West

Its difficult to narrow it down to only 5 songs, but this represents a lot of my workout music…It varies of course.

mido September 12, 2007 at 8:39 am

1) Bossy Sins Make Tragedies – Kelis vs Panic At The Disco (mashup)
2) Action Radar – Prodigy
3) Incredible – General Levy

5) Freestyler – Bomfunk MCs

Excellent site, btw πŸ™‚

Angie September 13, 2007 at 11:55 am

Ok..don’t laugh, but I listen to a little bit of everything.

Ones that really get me pumped are:
Limp Bizkit- Nookie
Limp Bizkit- Break Stuff
KT Tunstall – Suddenly I See
Fergie – London Bridges
Pat Benatar- I Need A Hero
Gwen Stefani – Wind it Up
Joan Jett – Bad Reputation

…like I said..don’t laugh..but I LOVE UM!

admin September 13, 2007 at 12:30 pm

Angie,

I’m not laughing, but you gotta admit the Pat Benatar choice is funny! Just don’t do your makeup like Pat and everything will be okay.

Good stuff if it gets you ready to wokout hard!

Rusty

john September 14, 2007 at 3:02 pm

i have a preference for any kind of violent rap music.

Especially songs containing gunshots and the repetitive inclusion of words such as bitch, ho, and muh-fucka. I like to feel gangsta when im lifting wieghts and jumping rope like a showoff near the dumbells.

Outside of the gym I don’t even like rap. lol

admin September 15, 2007 at 1:47 am

John,

Well…different strokes for different folks. As long as you don’t sing along with these explicit lyrics in the gym then that is cool.

Rusty

john September 16, 2007 at 11:59 pm

no, never sing them, just keep it to myself, lol

Savio September 21, 2007 at 6:05 am

Interesting selections by all. I prefer hardcore music, which is a fusion of punk rock and metal. I can’t stand heavy metal, because it’s all mostly negative, and always the same artists. Hardcore has new fresh faces not looking for all the stardom, just mostly out to spread a positive message. There’s subgenres within hardcore, and I stick mostly to Screamo, Jesuscore, and some Straight Edge/XXX (stands for: no drugs, no alcohol, and strict practice of monogamy). There’s a whole wikipedia article on this so enough explanation.
Here’s my 5 of many favorite bands at the gym:

1 Underoath
2 War of Ages
3 Fight the Battle
4 It Dies Today
5 Inhale Exhale

Once in a while Smooth Jazz music will get mixed up in the shuffle, which ironically gives me an extra shot of energy simply because of the change-up.

Magnate September 25, 2007 at 8:07 pm

High intensity work:

Silverchair – Isreal’s Son
Drowning Pool – Bodies
Lamb of God – Ashes of the wake
Skrape – Isolated
Dragonforce – Body breakdown

It’s all very angry, loud and fast.

For more tempo based lower intensity things (high rep or cardio), I’ll take anything with a beat really

Alchemist ft. Prodigy, Illa Gee & Nina Sky – Hold You Down
Alkaline Trio – Burn
Da Rude – Sandstorm
Daft Punk – One More Time
DJ Tiesto vs Kane – Rain down on me [radio edit]

ilyse December 5, 2007 at 10:43 am

Hiya! im a 23 yr. old female marine;I run everyday alternating between “sprintervals” (around 4.5 miles) and slower hill climbs (6.5 miles) these songs STILL motivate the hell outta me every time right till the end
I am a bit ecclectic when it comes to music so here is a little something for everyone:

1. Cascada-everytime we touch
2. The cult-fire woman
3. Finger eleven-paralyzer
4. Sepultura-refuse resist
5. Jay -z- dirt off ya shoulders

…see ecclectic indeed…enjoy πŸ˜€

admin December 5, 2007 at 11:13 am

ilyse,

I have a ton of respect for the Marines. You guys and girls are completely bad-ass. Anyway great songs…especially the Cult. Good stuff!

Rusty

Matt March 6, 2008 at 5:00 pm

the cheesier the better for me;

1.Bon Jovi-livin on a prayer
2.Journey-any song
3.Def Leopard-any
4.Van Halen-hot for teacher
5.White Snake-in the still of the night/here i go again

admin March 6, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Matt,

I’m a fellow 80’s kid as well. That stuff reminds me of early MTV. I remember talking about MTV the week it launched. It was so much better back then!

My favorite 80’s stuff…I was more a “new wave” guy.

INXS- Never Tear Us Apart (my all time favorite slow song)

Clash (technically late 70’s)

New Order – Bizzare Love Triangle

Modern English – Melt With You

I miss the 80’s! They actually sang song with melodies. A lot of the stuff now sometimes feels like a bit of a “cop out”…quite a bit of sampling of the 70’s and 80’s without too much original stuff.

Cheers,

Rusty

Adam March 11, 2008 at 9:08 pm

buckcherry: everything
bodyrockers: i like the way
rihanna: please dont stop the music

admin March 15, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Lindsay,

I used to dislike rihanna, since she carved apart “Tainted Love”, but now she’s growing on me. Good song picks.

Wow – I think that is a huge variety of music listed. I’m going to try listening to some of these other songs listed by these other workout fanatics. Maybe I’ll find more that I really like too. Here are my 5 favorites.
American Soviets – CCCP
Rock me Amadeous – Falco
X gonna give it to ya – DMX
We didn’t start the fire – Billy Joel
Right Here Right Now – Fat Boy Slim

I can not find the article on ” how to get hollywood fit in 30 days” or something like that. Getting fit fast, I know you said you would put it on the web site but I can’t find it.
Today is the first day that I have found your site, and I think it’s just what I’ve been looking for. But I’m having a hard time with the “what to eat” “eat or not to eat”. I want to get lean, I have muscle. I can do the not eat thing, but I need energy. What’s the answer to that? Please I’m searching for the get lean and have energy answer. I work out hard and often, but I’m not getting lean and I’m tired, too tired.
Thanks for a great web site.

1) Rage Against the Machine – No Shelter, Township Rebellion
2) Ghetto Boys – Die Motherf*ckers Die

5) Supermassive Black Hole – Muse

If you’re into the R&B/Techno.

Have fun everyone!

ellen September 7, 2009 at 9:07 am

My current top five are: Limp Biskit Chocolate Starfish & the Hotdog flavored Water. Just about any song on this cd gets me moving. Also like old Linkin Park. My Chemical Romance-The Black Parade and Buck Cherry-Fifteen. I could listen to these cd’s over and over again!!

WORK OUT AHOLIC September 13, 2009 at 11:55 pm

WOW, like no one said anything about disturbed…when im here lookin for new music cause disturbed got me through an entire of working out but it gets tiring.. but my favorites are…
#1. Voices-disturbed
#2. Indestructible-disturbed
#3. Facade-disturbed
#4. Criminal-disturbed
#5. Enough-disturbed

Anonymous September 27, 2009 at 1:14 am

I listen to Armin Van Burren “A State of Trance” which is really good European Trance/Techno music. He has several hundred episodes, each of which are about 2 uninterrupted hours of mixed songs (without changing tempo). Really good workout music.

Anika October 17, 2009 at 2:52 pm

I hate working out so I really need something to get me going and keep the energy up. I was also surprised that not a lot of no one said disturbed.. my favs being indestructible and into the fire. other than that my ipod consists of:

Papa Roach- Last Resort
Seether- Fake It
Timbaland- The Way I Are
The Ataris- Boy of Summer
Metro Station- Shake It

Basically anything fast and hard

Brett October 25, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Anika, I really support the choice of Seether, and Fake It in particular; I’ve been listening to that song for a couple months now and I’m really hooked on it, :P.

Anyways,

5. Seether – Fake It
4. Rise Against – Prayer of the Refugee
3. Rise Against – Paper Wings
2. Justice – DVNO (or Iron Maiden – The Trooper, depending on my mood)
1. Most of the time it’s Prodigy – Spitfire, but depending on the mood I’m in, I might prefer Muse – Hurricanes and Butterflies, or Korpiklaani – Vodka.

For those questioning my choice of Muse for first, it’s due to the lyrics themselves, not the speed or anything else about that song. πŸ™‚

Allan November 16, 2009 at 9:37 am

Tracey March 8, 2010 at 3:45 am

I listen to Peaches – all albums and songs because every tune is fast paced and full of explicit lyrics that make me smile while doing HIIT.

I also enjoy:
Yeah yeah yeahs – Heads will roll
MIA – Paper planes, Sunshine
Airborne Toxic Event – only one album and it has good tunes
Muse – Hysteria, The Resistance

Nik March 9, 2010 at 11:46 am

Heavier Lifting/HIIT (I need angrier/faster music to do these things)

Skillet – “Monster”
Sick Puppies – “You’re Going Down”
Silverstein – “Smile in Your Sleep”
Sum41 – “No Reason”
Trapt – “Still Frame”

Steady State Cardio/Light Lifts (the poppier the better!)

Alkaline Trio – “Calling all Skeletons”
Brand New – “Jude Law and the Semester Abroad”
Fall Out Boy – “7 Minutes in Heaven”
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus – “Damn Regret”
Home Grown – “Midnight City Sky”

Hey Rusty,

Nice site. I’m from Holland and I think it’s pretty cool that 3 out of 5 songs are from Dutch artists (TiΓ«sto & Kane, Fedde Le Grand and Ferry Corsten).

Anyway, really nice site with lots of great information.

Cheers

While outside of the gym I’m not a huge fan of rap and rock, its the complete opposite in the gym. Usually the words and beat just give you the pump you need to finish that sprint or that set. Here is my top five:

1. I will not bow: Breaking Benjamin
2. Hero: Skillet
3. Dangerous (feat. That Dude Prince): Waldo’s People
4. Feel It: Three Six Mafia feat. Flo Rida, Sean Kingston, and DJ Tiesto
5. New Divide: Linkin Park

head like a hole ( great when squatting with 8 wheels and no belt)
dragula
stigmata
blue monday

pretty much any late ’80’s industrial, the angrier the better.

chris January 11, 2011 at 10:36 pm

Im a metal, and a rap kinda guy, so what i use is metal to get me pumped, and rap to make me feel good.

i listen to asking alexandria, and bullet for my valentine to get the most energy flowing through my body.

two of my favorite bands, and both really good, every song is amazing.

Lasith February 11, 2011 at 11:05 pm

I prefer electronic music while doing my mix of cardio and pumping. I throw in some rock, pop and other stuff too, but check into these few if you want to go over your mental limits:

Saiko Pod – Electro Sheep (Audio Junky Dub Mix)
Faithless – Sun to me
Faithless – Not going home
Stephan Bodzin – Liebe Ist…
Anthony Pappa – Moments. /Yep, the whole album/

cheers
