People rarely talk about losing fat around the face. When you are overweight, you lose a lot of what makes your face look unique. Body fat, blurs the jawline and cheekbones. Fat also makes your face blend in with your pudgy neck. A large reason that supermodels have to be lean for photo shoots is that a low body fat enhances their face as well.

Your Face Reveals if You Are In Good Shape
I can easily tell if someone is at a low body fat level by looking at their face. It is funny…a lot of people are fooled by guys with lean arms and legs. If that guy has a chubby face or a blurred jawline, I guarantee you that he does not have toned abs. The face is a dead give away about someone’s conditioning. It is impossible to be in great shape and have a fat face. As you get lean, your face takes on a nicer appearance as well.
A Pudgy Face Isn’t a “Handsome” Face
Women really enjoy a strong jawline and chin…that square jawed “GQ” look. Models like Tyson and Antonio Sabato Jr. have this look. So do Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and all the other Hollywood sex symbols. A sharp angular face create a masculine look that is different than a woman’s softer features.
Jared Leto is an Example of This

Women dig this guy because he has his own hip style going on. Jared pulls it off because he isn’t a big bulky guy. He would look pretty dumb if he slapped on 30 pounds of muscle! He wouldn’t be able to pull off this funky look if he had a bodybuilder build. I guarantee you that 95 out of 100 young women would rather date this guy than the current Mr. Olympia. If you gave women a choice over the model in the Armani Exchange picture above vs. any competitive bodybuilder…the results could be even more dramatic. Sorry for going off topic, but I’m just trying to explain once again that it is better to just have a natural amount of muscle with exceptional tone vs. gaining as much muscle as possible.
Women’s Faces Look Better at a Lower Body Fat As Well
I am not for women going overboard and getting way too lean. It normally isn’t an issue, but women who do those fitness competitions look a little too lean in my opinion and their face takes on an angular appearance. This isn’t a great look. Think more along the lines of healthy levels of body fat like Jessica Biel or Megan Fox. Those women are fit, but still have soft feminine features. Guys love that look for sure!

If You Have 30+ Pounds to Lose I Have Good News For You
You have a much more attractive face hidden under that excess body fat. When you lose all that weight, not only will you have a nicer looking body, you will have a sexier face as well. Seriously…look at Charlize Theron and Jared Leto again…these two people look dramatically different. To be honest, even if you only have 10 pounds of fat to lose, your face will improve. People will recognize that you look better, they just won’t be able to put their finger on what is different about you.
Staying Lean is Insurance Against Getting a Double Chin
Want to make sure that you don’t get that dreaded double chin? Stay lean your entire life! Gravity can’t pull down fat on your face, when that fat doesn’t exist. You can look young for a long period of time, if you don’t let your face get fat. Want to keep that youthful appearance you had in your wedding picture or back in college or high school? Stay lean year round, year after year.
A Leaner Face Makes For a Better “Look”
I live in a downtown area where a lot of the guys and girls dress in the newest fashions and drive expensive cars, etc. What is funny is that a percentage of these guy are girls look great in these hip European and Hollywood fashions, while others look a little “off”. The difference between these two groups is that those who are lean look “congruent” with the clothes they are wearing. When a guy with a pudgy face tries to get the spiky or messy hair look…it kind of looks funny. Same with the bald guys…the guys who shave their head and have a pudgy face kind of have a “potato head” look. The lean guys with the same hair style look cool.
Summary: So getting lean isn’t just about looking better naked (which in my opinion is reason enough to get lean). Getting lean will make your face more kissable as well!

Hey Rusty need your expert advice! I’ve started a conditioning regimen which consists of 150 pushups and 150 situps every other day. I had to wait till next month to join a gym because of living situation..anyways a friend of mine suggested a whey protein shake, so i went out and bought designer whey. I weigh 160 pounds and im really not looking to “BULK” up, just to get lean and tone. Is the protein shake a smart move? If i only have 1 protein shake after exercising everyother day..will this add uneccesary weight? ie face weight? I heard somewhere that protein shakes add face weight/make you look bloated?! Again im just looking to get lean/tone and do not want to add bodyfat..any help/advice you could give would be greatly appreaciated! Thanks!
is that true if you lose some weight it will go from the face.what happen if you have fat face since i was baby i hate my ugly fat face and small mouth and double chin.i am awful looking i hate it.

I have a bit of the same problem as you, my jawline is not visible and I have big cheeks… But a year ago I lost a lot of weight, and my face got much more defined.. sadly I´ve gained some weight again and the first place it got to was my face… But it is possible. Try a stepper, you can buy them very cheap online:-) Hope you find a way.
OH man. I think I’d look a little freaky if I lost anymore weight. I already have a teeny scrawny neck, pointy chin, narrow jaw, HUGE bug eyes and full lips.
But also another thing is to watch out for the salt…when people are heavy, they’re also probably eating a lot of salt when increases puffiness and fluffiness.

You’ve really motivated me into losing weight.I started working out 3 days ago and my stomach looks smaller already but it’s still big. I’m 14 and I’m like 175 IBS (three days ago maybe dropped a little) and 5’7 like, really fat right? Will I see results in my face if I hit cardio hard and lift for like 20 minutes? Thanks man!
Rusty–One BIG mistake in the article. Charlize Theron wore prosthetics in the movie to change the shape of her face and jaw! That is not the way her face looks naturally when she gains weight.
Actually, she wore prosthetic teeth but maybe it changed her jawline a little bit.
Ridiculous! First of all Charlize Therons character was made to look overtly unattractive. Gaining weight is only half of it. Look at how her skin looks different. Jared Leto -same. Dressing poorly etc. Ever notice in Before/After photos people lose weight . They look better- why? Because they are actually smiling in their “after” pictures, dressed up and photoshopped to look their best. You can be slightly overweight and more attractive than a person who is thin but has an ugly face.
When a womans face is too lean she starts to look like a man !
This article is very true; we really do not know what makes a person’s face attractive or not. Lower body fat percentage definitely has a lot to do with it, but recent studies have shown that even things like testosterone level and stress in life can be read on a person’s face!
I think its the diet on how you are going to lose the weight,because wrong foods are going to give you that old hollow look.whereas ,proper nutrition,will help achieve that healthy beautiful skin and toned face.

I know a skinny face always looks better but I just don’t have 30 or even 10 pounds to lose. At 90 pounds (height 5’2), I’m already underweight according to my BMI. I’m about to become 28 years old in a few months and my face is still pudgy as ever…like a slightly plump kid’s face. It has some sort of definition but my cheekbones don’t show at all and I have some fat below my cheeks. *Sigh* Besides plastic surgery, is there anything else I can do?
Oh I forgot to say, I have been about the same weight since I was 14 years old. I have been slender my whole life (except when I was 3-4 years old) but for my fat face.

I’m a beginner to do some cardio; however, I found out that after doing cardio (such swimming or jogging for around 1 hour), my BF increases much (around 2%) (measure conducted after taking 2 hour rests after doing cardio), and actually some people also report the same thing elsewhere on internet about the same case. Do you have any advice for that? Thanks a lot!!!
Okay so i have 30 pounds to lose and everytime i feel my face its all squishy and i can pack a huge amount of fat with my fingers on each cheek, around my jawline and eyes. I look at pictures of when i was younger and want my face to look like that again.
when i lose 30 pounds my BMI would be 19.4, is that enough weight to lose for my face to lose so much fat, cause there’s really alot, it effects my smile and makes me look weird and everything.

My problem is sagging. I’ve felt that losing more weight will increase that (face and abs, and I do work out a lot). Are you saying it will not? But will tighten my skin? I am 5’5″ and 135lbs
It’s not about lose weight in your legs, it’s about losing whole body fat. Continue your strict diet and working out.:)
What’s interesting to me is how their skin looks so much better when they are slim. Wonder has that to do with the grease showing up through their skin (which I think is transparent) when they are fat?
I agree. I am just a little bit overweight, and my face has a squarish appearance to it, when it used to be oval. I was skinnier then, too.

I have a very different story to share, Rusty. I am 5″4′ and weigh 155 pounds (71 kilos). I came down to this weight from 78 kilos (172 pounds). I lost this weight over one year. Now, everyone tells me how sickly I look.
I just don’t have muscles on my face. My face is naturally hollow at the cheeks. My face always looks haggard and drawn.
So now, even though I have about 15 kilos (33 pounds) to lose, I am already being cautioned against falling sick.
I want my face to fill out while the rest of me loses. Is there a way this can happen?

this is great motivation. I want my old face back. I feel like ive even forgotten it. since ive gained 40 pounds I look like a different person! so im HOPING I can go back to how I looked before considering it all happened in just a few short years. I used to have a long angular, high cheekbone soft and pretty face. im just bummed cuz AGING hit me at the SAME time so I just couldnt TELL if it was the weight or theage.. i am 38 now.. but up until 33 I looked 18!!! SUPER EXTRA YOUNG ‘for my age’ but such as it can be with such people… it can ‘catch up to you suddenly and quick’ and now I look in my 30′s suddenly and thats rapid aging. im hoping its just the weight! I DONT expect to look 18 again although that’d be nice since I just did a few years ago! but it’d be nice to look 25-29… late 20′s!? im afraid cuz so many say at a certain age that losing weight actyally AGES you. but I gotta go for this! I am so happy that I chanced upon your website. I was 205lb at 5ft11 and my face was podgy and I positively looked ugly. cutting out carbs and fats and following a rigorous weight training I have brought my weight down to 180lb. You are absolutely right apart from my face, my entire persona has changed. I am 66 years and my friends insist that I dont look a day over 45. Thanks for inspiring me
Untrue… I have a visible four pack, not a six pack yet… and a really fat face.
I’m sure its true for the vast majority of people that their face equates the leanness of their body but its simply untrue for me.
@Getnogirlsuk It probably means that you are skinny fat. You can get the so-called “four pack” by shedding enough fats through dieting but it doesn’t mean you are lean and fit.
