I thought he looked like a freaky little creep before... Always been a huge fan of his music... but his looks, not so much. Now I look at him and holy crap, "Closer" sums it up rather nicely.
I have worked with recovering drug addicts before. Addictive personalities are just that... addictive. In the long run you can hope to be drawn towards positive practices, vs negative ones. I would hazard a guess that his new addiction, his new outlet, is weight lifting. As someone who enjoys weight lifting as an outlet on a personal level, I'm happy for him that he's discovered it. More than that, I think he looks like a man now, not a boy.

Steroids would potentially change his voice. It would be more likely HGH if he was on anything, but Test and HGH probably should be prescribed to most men over the age of 40 anyway. Your levels start to drop pretty dramatically. I mean dosing in low to moderate levels in cycles. But you can simply eat a lot and work out every day using compound exercises and get like that, too.

I didn't read every single comment here, but I did want to echo what people have been saying about what his lifestyle was really like back in the 90s versus what it's been like since he got clean and sober.

He admits that he was a bad heroin addict, finding himself often throwing up from withdrawal sickness. He wasn't in control of his own mind and I doubt very much he spent much time trying to stay fit.

After he got clean and sober, he started working out a LOT. I think at first it was trail cycling near his home (at the time) in Louisiana. He funneled a lot of his energy into both therapy as well as lifting and cycling. That period between 2002 and 2005 when we never heard a peep from him, he had absolutely no confidence in his songwriting abilities anymore and did other things.

2005's "With Teeth" was his return into the spotlight as a sober person. He said he honestly wouldn't have been surprised if that album had failed since he had been out of the limelight for so long. The rest is history.

I can identify with the whole concept of fat being harder to keep off now compared to when I was young. I'm almost 37 and you wouldn't know if you looked at me how much I do for myself. It takes so much more now than it did when I was 20 and could get away with anything.

Thanks for reading. :-)

Firstly, comparing these photos hardly seems fair. One is a modelled photo designed for advertisement, which could easily have been doctored in a number of ways. The second is a photo from underneath, which adds several pounds, and is during a live gig, where, as a singer he has to make certain movements to extrude some notes. Also I should point out the 10 year time shift that could have some effect on why he doesn't look the same.

Yes, he has gained some weight, but no it doesn't look bad, perhaps he's just taking a little more of a laid back approach to life as he gets a little older. And why the hell not?

Just seems like this post is a bit of an attack of Reznor, suggesting he's used steroids, saying he's too fat... All just a bit too personal y'know? 'Specially from someone who's claiming to be a fan.

Also - Eminem. Lyrically, he's great. But I guess I can understand wanting to punch him in the face... Not really my kind of music, but you gotta give some respect, yo?

I don't know, it could just be from getting older. It happened to me. I just got wider all around as I got older. I never took steroids and I actually work out less than when I was younger and lighter. At 5'8", 205 lbs, I do have some fat,but my overall mass is suprisingly dense. People that haven't seen me in a while comment on how I've transformed "into a linebacker."

I just wanted to say in response to Hurt fitting Johnny's life better than Trent's....

Uhhhhhh no. The beauty of music, especially Trent's music, is that you can relate to it. I mean, if anything, this song fits TRENT'S life better than Johnny's. Yes, I love Johnny's version, but that just pisses me off.

Its good Trent started to get it together. It's good when someone has the need to change, wants to change, and then acts on it and begins to change. These days we really lack control. So we have to cheerish what we still have, that we are still able to decide things for ourselves sometimes. Lifting weights can really help put your focus into something else. Since i've been lifting its helped me manage my stress/anxiety. Reguardless of what Trent looks like or does, he is one of the few true musical genious in the world. And if he can be healthier and feel better while doing it, all the power to him!!

<strong>shane#1,</strong>

So you came over to the dark side and are eating meat now! Welcome! Chicken is great, but I've been eating a lot more fish recently as well. In fact when I go out to eat, I always look to see if they have some form of non-breaded fish and vegetables.

Fred Durst makes me angry. Just looking at him irritates me. All those slacker wannabe kids that act like they are from the tough part of town drive me nuts.

<strong>Futon,</strong>

Dave Navarro was really pudgy when he was addicted to drugs. He hired a personal trainer after he left Jane's Addiction and cleaned his act up. He isn't the ideal health role model, but he is working at it.

Good point about Trent Reznor. Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but did you click that video? He isn't just pudgy...he is a muscular freak of nature. Anyway...I really enjoy everything he does and I am one of his biggest fans. If he wants to stay big, I'm still going to his concerts...buying his music, etc. I think he is a musical genious.

Have a great one!

I was thinking that perhaps it might be due to medication FOR depression. Certain medications make you gain weight.

Also, given that he's been an addiction wouldn't that kill his seratonin levels anyway? The guy's metabolism is probably knackered by now.

He's probably got to expand before he can shrink back down and there's always a chance he won't be that small again.

Actually, depression and weight gain are two of the more obvious reasons to avoid drug use.

I actually think it's good that he's getting clean and taking the hard route.

Also, I don't doubt that there are eating disorders in the male rock singer ranks - the superskinny look may be because a few are naturally that way but it's also, I suspect, because a lot of them are addicts of some kind.

Tim,

When I get back from my week long business trip, I'll make it a priority. Those type of posts always get a lot of traffic from Google and increase the readership, but they can take a long time to put together. I promised this a long time ago, so this is long overdue. I'll get to it soon.

Tom,

If you have the money to spare, then creatine isn't a complete waste. I think the biggest benefit would be to take it when you are extremely lean and dieting hard and look maybe a bit too flat. It does put a quick cosmetic pump into the muscles. Protein powder and meal replacement shakes are the best investments, because it is just basically a clean meal...plus many of them are loaded with vitamins you may be missing when dieting.

My main piece of advice is don't get caught in the "supplement trap". If you read the mainstream fitness magazines, you feel like you need to buy 10 different supplements to look your best. You can get there by strategically eating healthy foods. As far as supplements...my favorites are protein shakes of some sort and a really good multivitamin or antioxidant.

Hope that helps,

Hey Rusty,

Great example of what bulking up too quickly can do a person's appearance. Like you I have never been a fan of the excessively bulk look. It makes you look too bloated and I really can't stand it when the veins literally look like they're going to pop. Luckily since I have a fast metabolism and find it hard to put in weight I don't think this will ever be a problem for me.

I've just got a quick question for you regarding creatine. You say for the most part it's a waste of money. I tried creatine when I was in college and found it really helped give me that little bit of extra energy and stamina to keep going during my workouts. Maybe it was a placebo effect (me sub-conciously thinking I had more energy because I was taking the creatine) but it did seem genuine to me. Is creatine a waste of money at all times?

I've not bought any supplements for a couple of years now but I was considering getting some protein, glutamine (I found it really helped reduce muscle soreness the day after working out last time I tried it), creatine (for the above reasons) and zinc & magnesium (I've read that this is a good supplement). What's your opinion?

Regards,

Tom

<strong>Matt,</strong>

Incredible videos! I love that old Joy Division stuff...Love it! Being a massive New Order fan...by default I loved Joy Division. It is nice to see reference to a video that is not, "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I actually think his dance moves are pretty hip and trippy...one more thing...Peter Murphy has an incredible voice...I forgot how distinctive his voice is.

<strong>Dale,</strong>

I got down to 5% before the trip to Mexico. That picture was taken 3-4 days into the trip and I was eating like a pig, staying up late, drinking a decent amount of beers. I'd guess I was around 7% in that picture...which is about what I maintain year round. I don't get too hung up on body fat percentage...some people look great at 10% and other look really soft. Just get to the point where your abs look sharp and everything else will look great. If you have a 4 pack...you typically need to lose 5-10 more pounds to get a six pack.

<strong>Trif,</strong>

That is great you are giving out great free info. I enjoy your blog and know you will do well. I can't really add more to my plate right now as far a competition goes...but that is a great idea! As far as the "intellichat" tool goes...I'm neutral about it. I wouldn't be comfortable with adding it, because I really like to do my best to maximize the website visitor experience. I wouldn't necessarily judge the product just based on that pop-up...it is kind of annoying, but the author Michael Geary is a stand up guy who knows his stuff.

<strong>Hulbs,</strong>

You are the man...I am amazed at how quickly you have lost body fat and again how quickly you have added muscle. You are going to make others jealous. I have no doubt you will be able to get as lean and defined as you want. Keep up the great work! Perfect strategy by the way.

Hi Rusty,

I haven't posted in a while.

Like Brad above I'm also in the process of adding a bit of lean muscle to my frame.

You may recall that I lost a heap of fat using a combination of the strategies you talk about on your site to go from 198 pounds (around 17% bf) to 169 pounds (around 6% bf). I'm 6'2" and slight build.

Anyway about 10 days ago I started to try to put on a bit of muscle using the methods you talked about in;

<a href="http://fitnessblackbook.com/muscle-building/how-to-quickly-gain-the-ideal-amount-of-muscle-mass-for-your-body-type/" rel="nofollow">how to quickly gain the ideal amount of muscle mass for your body type</a>

It seems to be working really well so far. I'm currently @ about 173 pounds with most of the gain appearing to be lean muscle. I'm not going to get carried away with too much muscle gain though. I don't plan on going over 180.
So atm my work looks look this
Mon - Bis, shoulders, Tris (6-9 reps @ 5 sets each exercise)
Tues - Chest and Back (" " " " " " )
Wed - HIIT followed by steady state cardio
Thurs - same as Mon
Fri - same as Tues
Sat - day off
Sun - Sailing (races average 1.5 to 2 hours and give a good full body work out)

Because my metabolism is very fast I'm only doing the one dedicated cardio session plus the sailing as far as cardio.

I'm also eating around 18 calories per pound of weight atm.

Once I get to my goal as far as lean muscle goes I'll go back the routine and diet I originally used to get really lean just to get rid of any stubborn fat that I want to shread (i.e 10 calories per pounds of body weight, HIIT and SS 4-5 times a week, weights for strenth 3 times a week etc etc).

I'll also probably buy Lyles' book at that point.

Thanks again for all your tips Rusty.

Rusty, I know this is off topic, but I wanted to talk to you about a bad experience I have had with "Best "Six Pack Ab" Course" that you recommend. I wrote about it on my blog , here: <a href="http://burn-body-fat.blogspot.com/2008/04/sorry-for-lack-of-activity.html" rel="nofollow">burn-body-fat.blogspot.com...sorry-for-lack-of-activity</a>
so I will resume to posting a piece of the article:
" Just now I visited a Website that promised to help you get ROCK HARD SIX PACK ABS. I took a look at it, but did not want to buy and wanted to close the window. A message appeared that a Sales Agent wants to talk to me about a Discount. And I said OK thinking that I could ask for more details and get some of my questions answered.

But after writing a number of queries and seeing the same responses I came to REALIZE THE TRUTH - I was talking to a Automated software [company website here: http://www.intellichat.com/].

People, do you think a person that claims that he /she only cares about helping you do a sleazy thing like that?!

I was talking alone, thinking that someone else is on the other end of the line.

It really is sad what lust for money does to people. :(
"

I would like your opinion on this.

Also, I am finishing a complete fat loss material (diet, training, goal setting and motivation) and want to Start a Clinic On my blog. And my diet strategy is 4 meals a day while I remember that you prefer a 1 to 3 meal/ day strategy.

Anyway, I am thinking that it could be cool for each of use to take 2-3 people under our wing for a 6 to 8 week period and do a little completion to see which strategy works better.

During this time the people will keep us and blog readers up to date by posting pictures, measurements and thoughts and we will give them initial material and help with questions and motivation.

And after the clinic is finished, we update our initial content based on participants results and offer them FREE to anyone.

More info a bout the clinic here: <a href="http://burn-body-fat.blogspot.com/2008/04/sorry-for-lack-of-activity.html" rel="nofollow">burn-body-fat.blogspot.com...sorry-for-lack-of-activity</a>

[rant]
And I am not taking about FREE as in "I will give you a bulshit 20 page ebook and you give me your email so I can spam you with emails to get my real books and to do shameless masked publicity for other bulshit books or free ebooks that require you to give your email to see so this circle can repeat itself."

I am talking as in free as core things you need to know about nutrition, working out and motivation to be able to have real results.

And maybe a paid version, that would be between 4.99$ and 9.99$ in which you add the why to the how presented in the free book and compile all the other things that people need.

[/rant]

Rusty I'm an starting a cruciade here!
People have a right to have access to free information.
And they can not be treated in the way I mentioned at the begining of the post.

Are you with me?
