Madonna’s Gym, “Hard Candy Fitness”, Coming to a City Near You?

November 3, 2010

So Madonna’s Gym empire, Hard Candy Fitness, is launching in Mexico City on November 29th (a little less than a month from now). Yep, this lady is right up there with Oprah when it comes to being ambitious. I think it is cool she is doing this. The funny thing is that I just heard about this yesterday and figured it would make for an entertaining topic to discuss. Some of the places where I have seen this announced were pretty critical. I actually think that the gym industry has HUGE room for improvement and my hope is that Madonna’s gyms will be a step forward.

Madonna's Gym

[This is a recent Dolce & Gabanna ad that Madonna was featured in. She is 52 and looks closer to 32. She is doing something right.]

The Biggest Criticism I Found When Doing Research…

A lot of people pointed to a photograph that showed Madonna’s ripped biceps and veins in her forearms. I also believe that Madonna tends to get a little too lean at times. The good thing is that this state is actually hard to maintain and my guess is that she doesn’t look this lean most of the time. All she would have to do is either back off on her training a bit or increase her calories. She doesn’t have massive muscles…she just gets a little more lean than I would recommend.

Hard Candy Fitness – Slightly Smaller Than LA Fitness

So it looks like her first gym in Mexico City will be 30,000 sq ft. If you want to envision 30,000 sq feet, a lot of the newer LA Fitness centers are around 40,000 square feet. So 30,000 square feet sounds like a good size. Compare that with 24 Hour Fitness’s “Ultra-Sport” clubs which are 100,000 square feet. I actually believe it is smart to stay a little smaller to insure profitability of the club. So many chains in the US are having financial troubles, that possibly Madonna was advised to keep the size of her clubs down a bit compared to the competition.

Mexico City

[So Mexico City is the 11th most populated city in the world at over 8 million residents. This puts them right behind Tokyo and ahead of cities like New York, London, and Los Angeles.]

More Info About Mexico City

I have to be honest…when I heard Madonna was opening up her first Hard Candy Fitness Center in Mexico City, I was surprised. I am a huge fan of Mexico and their culture. Love how they are family oriented and know how to have fun and celebrate. I guess I always thought of Mexico City as a dangerous place. Research has shown me that cities on the Mexican/US border are where the violence happens most. One city which is across the border from El Paso, Ciudad Juarez, is where things are really tough due to the illegal drug trade. I found mixed info about Mexico City. It seems that the reported crime index is much lower than most large cities…but some sources say that possibly only 10% of the crimes are reported. Who knows? My best guess is that there are nice parts and rough parts like any major city. Perhaps, some of the readers who know more about Mexico and Mexico City can fill me in…please comment below this post.

Bosques de las Lomas

[So her fitness center is going to be located in the Bosques de las Lomas neighborhood. This place looks like a high end neighborhood in Southern California. I spent a few minutes looking at images in Google…some super nice homes in this area.]

She is Being Assisted by Mark Mastrov (Founded 24 Hour Fitness)

So 24 Hour Fitness is the World’s largest gym, if you count the amount of memberships. It has roughly 3 million members and 400 clubs. This is probably the top person in the world if you want to know how to grow a successful fitness chain. No doubt that Madonna should do well teaming up with Mastrov.

“Throughout her career Madonna has been devoted to fitness and well-being and has worked out in literally hundreds of gyms around the world,” Hard Candy Fitness said in a news release Monday.

“Madonna’s world tours have taken us to many of our favorite cities around the world. We are looking forward to opening Hard Candy Fitness with NEV in many of these same places.”

So Who Would Consider Working Out at Hard Candy?

Supposedly it will have state-of-the-art equipment along with a wide range of free weights and Hammer Strength machines, etc. My guess is that it would be a much more stylish version of 24 Hour Fitness. I don’t need to workout in a fancy place, but it could be cool…especially if they played good music and had a high energy. I guess we will see. Here is the gym logo. Pretty cool!

Hard Candy Fitness

One last thing; I can’t have a post about Madonna without some videos…

Some Outstanding Madonna Video Mashups on YouTube!

I love YouTube! Seriously…out of the millions of videos being posted, most are kind of lame…but some people have serious skills. I wanted to feature three of the coolest user generated videos I have ever seen on that site. If you grew up in the 80’s you will love this. If you are a little younger you will still probably like this. My favorite is the Madonna and Depeche Mode mashup. I want these for my iPod!

[Depeche Mode is 80’s music that has stood the test of time. Their music is brilliant and innovative…I never get sick of it!]

[This Human League song was the slow song played at every High School dance I ever went to. If I imagine hard enough I can almost smell the fine scents of Aquanet Hair Spray and Drakkar Noir Cologne. The 80’s were filled with chemicals…you can’t get hair looking that stylin’ on its own! Note: I blame the ozone depletion on those who graduated between 1984-1992.]

[You wouldn’t think the Sex Pistols would be a good match to mix with Madonna. That is what makes this mashup possibly the best of the three. I still like the Depeche Mode mix best, because I like Depeche Mode better than the Sex Pistols…but the timing on this one is spot-on.]

Note: I want to give props to the first blog where I saw this published. Fit Tip Daily

Important Message: Although this site has received 25+ million visitors, I am starting from scratch and abandoning it. This site is dated and old school looking, terrible to read on mobile, etc.

It's like a Ford Pinto compared to my new site...which is like a Ferrari. Click the link to head over to my new site.

Madonna definitely is in great shape considering her age (although I’m with you that she’s a bit too lean for my taste.) I guess you can blame a culture where “the leaner the better” also applies to women.

I’ve never been to Mexico City but would like to eventually fly in and then bus it down to Oaxaca, taking in a few places along the way.

Jeffrey @ Get This Ripped November 3, 2010 at 10:28 pm

I think this is a great. The fitness movement has been growing for a while now. Madonna starting a chain of gyms will definitely encourage more women to join in on the action.

Although, seeing how nice these gyms look makes me wonder how much the monthly fee will be.

Btw, I love the 3 clips you have at the end of the article. My favourite one has to be the Mashup with Depeche Mode.

Chris Cannon @ FreeMuscleBuildingTips.com November 3, 2010 at 10:30 pm

Rusty,

Any time celebrity can be used to promote the health and fitness industry, I think it’s generally a good thing.

Though I’m willing to bed there is more to Madonna’s youthful appearance then a lifestyle good diet and exercise 🙂

Mexico City is as dangerous as any other big city, it has its good and its bad but in my opinion the biggest issue they have is managing transportation. I have never ever ever seen anything like this. traffic is always crazy, it doesnt matter if its noon on Tuesday or 3am on Sunday, there is ALWAYS traffic and for that reason I would not live there. but it was cool to visit.

I love Madonna and I’m a fan of the bells and whistles when it comes to training facilities so I like the idea of a Madonna sponsored Gym specially if it comes equipped with a live DJ, however the bells can grow old quickly and whats most important is equipment and location. at least for me.

Brian November 3, 2010 at 10:32 pm

In your pictures @ the top, the only think I’m impressed with is the impressive photoshopping technology.. Those pictures have been doctored more than Joan Rivers face.. Madonna is 50-whatever, & he veiny arms look to be in there 60’s.. G.R.O.S.S

Madonna has a nasty, steriod-injected body that is no where close to the aesthetic any women is looking for.. I’m sure she’s a nice lady, but her body is “ate-up” with malnutrition..

Have a good night Rusty.. Hope all is well in Seattle..

Raymond - ZenMyFitness November 3, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Love this topic yeah I’m a big 80s tragic (at 47 y/o I’m a specialist ..haha) I really do appreciate Maddona’s music in fact I’m holidaying in Singapore at the moment and I was only thinking to buy her CD last night!

Would I work out in her gym? For sure! (all I need is a power squat rack I don’t need much else) I think her gym vibe would be kickin
I think she has kept her fitness at the extreme end and it would be great if most people followed her example … but she does go to far with it ..those boney pictures aren’t a good look it makes her look like a Drag Queen rather than a sexy siren!

Anyhow great video find too I love Depeche Mode , thanks
Raymond

Mike @ Papa Star Health November 3, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Hey Rusty, Great Post! Yeah I saw the Biceps with bulging veins on TV with everyone making fun of Madonna too. Joel McHale (who is actually really funny and the soup is a great show) said the name of her gym was going to be “scary veiny arms gym”. I’m glad to find out she decided to go with something different! I agree Madonna takes things overboard but she always has. No doubt she has kept in impressive shape though and works her ass off in all facets of life. She probably works too hard which is why she is so successful. In truth everyone could learn a lesson from that… I think that lesson is work hard to be successful but enjoy life and don’t go overboard otherwise you just end up a weirdo. Obviously other people would disagree with that, but that’s what makes life interesting.

Clint - Crude Fitness November 3, 2010 at 10:36 pm

I would argue that she doesn’t look that great.
Each time I see her dancing around in her gym gear on video hits, I always think to myself “time to put some clothes on lady!”.

Too thin at such an age just makes you look older.
As Brian said, photoshop is a magical thing. 🙂

Srdjan P - Bloom to Fit November 3, 2010 at 10:41 pm

Big chain gyms are all the same and I don’t see this one being any different. I’m impressed by the fact that Madonna would do something like this and I hope she’s doing it for more than just attention.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out!

Ahmed November 3, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Money in the bank!

Love when celebrities actually come up with intelligent business ideas.

Pete - The Healthy Minute November 3, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Hey Rusty,

I agree with Chris…if a celebrity can help influence people to improve their health and fitness, then I am all for it.

With that being said, I would much rather work out in my basement than at a gym called “Hard Candy.” The name just doesn’t give me an image of a gym where people are serious about their workouts.

It kinda’ reminds me of a place where the ladies shower and put on makeup BEFORE they workout.

I’ll stick to the local YMCA or the modest equipment and bodyweight exercises I do at home.

Best wishes,

Pete

Valdo November 3, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Hmm interesting…. Anyways, mexico is a nice place its just the border is kinda errr….. messy …. don’t believe evrything the media tell you. My family lives 1 hour away from the beach Melaque ( I dont recomend that beach it has many jelly fish. They Hurt! Melaque is about a 2-3 hour Drive from Puerto Vallarta. I do recomend Puerto Vacacional. Its a private beach (its the type where they shot movies there) Manzanillo is nice only if you dont mind the lose crocks lol

Jordan - The Healthy Teacher November 3, 2010 at 10:55 pm

Funny that you mention Madonna’s rockin body. Today I came across a tabloid magazine exposing celebrities without make up, and she was on the cover. At 52 she does look great, no denying that. Not sure about Mexico City, but I’m sure she did her research, and the logo is pretty slick. Nice tunes Rusty…people amaze me with their creations everyday.

Tom-Your Fitness Quest November 3, 2010 at 11:16 pm

Madonna, Fitness, and 80’s music- No wonder you have so many comments on this post. I love the 80’s, but I was never a huge Madonna fan. However, I respect her for her business skills. She’s still going strong after 30 years and not many artists can say that. I’ll admit she has kept in shape over the years, but the arm pictures are freaky! I’m also not sure of the name. Hard Candy? It sounds more like a girls club than a gym. I guess we’ll see how it goes.

Adria November 3, 2010 at 11:17 pm

Thanks For The Props!!! Love your site, you’re doing an awesome job!

Reinaldo November 3, 2010 at 11:27 pm

More available gyms will never hurt. God knows mine get pretty crowded and that I wish to send half of the atendees to another gym far, far away sometimes =D
About Madonna looking 36 years old, LOL Not so. I saw some pre-photoshop pics of her face and no, she doesn’t. That black&white pic you posted – shopped. Her body doesn’t show her age, but her face does.

Juan Manuel November 4, 2010 at 12:31 am

Yeah, Bosques de las lomas is a very wealthy part of town. Also, Mexico City has over 20 million people. It is huge and crowded and takes forever to get anywhere. Being so huge, there are very safe parts where you can walk at 3 AM and not worry and very dangerous parts, but in general I would say it is safe.

Deanna November 4, 2010 at 12:51 am

If I were to join a gym owned by a celebrity, Madonna would be my top choice! IMHO, her “overly lean” physique and “veiny arms” at least give me the hope that I won’t walk into a gym with candy-a$$ pink workout equipment.

Sure, it’s not the look I’m going for, but I’d just feel so much better going to a gym owned by a fitness buff like Madonna than one owned by, say, Paris Hilton. *shudder*

Tina November 4, 2010 at 1:01 am

I may covet Madonna’s discipline and comittment to excellence, but definitely not her look… I seem to remember her ex-husband making a comment that cuddling with her was like cuddling up to a piece of gristle. Now, granted, maybe he was bitter but somehow, looking at her I can see how it could have been the truth of his experience. Also, though we are not talking about her face in this post as much as her body, as of late she has that ‘Hollyweird’ look that resembles too much plastic surgery.

I think that Halle Berry has the fit bod that me and most of my 40-something friends would love to have.

Can’t really comment on her gym as I’m a work-out-at-home gal, but she will probably do it right being the overachiever that she seems to be.

Brad @ Venus Index November 4, 2010 at 1:06 am

When it comes to gyms, you have to go to either extreme, less than 12,000 square ft or over 50,000. Playing in the middle is a tough game.

12,000 -> your expense load is super low and you can go lower rates

50,000+ -> you can get a higher membership rate

In the middle, you’ll either be low cut by the bargain shoppers who flock to the 12,000… or outclassed by the ones that can afford the higher end club.

If I were going to do it, I’d go smaller, 24 hrs, minimal staff and just have more. 🙂

Avoid Mexico.
Not only Mexico City!
I lived there for long time and I’ve never encountered an honest person.
Sorry if I offend anybody but it’s true; one thing is if you go in holiday a couple of weeks (everywhere is a paradise on vacation) but the true is different.
I travel around the world since 40 years and have been in every country: Mexico is the worst!

Anita November 4, 2010 at 4:28 am

I say good on her for adding yet another aspect to her business. She looks great not just now but for as long as I can remember. It suits her image – she’s never given a different message – always looked after herself.

Of course her body is a little too muscular for my personal liking, but lucky for me (and most ladies) it is blooming hard work to get to THAT stage. So we end up with fairly decent looking bodies anyway ;).

I like the idea. Thanks for covering it Rusty. Oh and thanks for the videos – music in the morning does wonders for the mood – woot woot.

David Gowing - Advanced Health & Fitness November 4, 2010 at 5:39 am

Yeah it makes total sense for Madonna to go this direction as she always pops up on best and worst body lists, depending on who you listen to. She definitely doesn’t look her age. It’s also a smart more as the public’s interest in body image and health and fitness is increasing at a rapid rate.

In a similar move Madonna became a share holder in Vita Coco coconut water last year, which is marketed as a natural sports drink. So there seems to be a trend.

To be honest though Madonna used to train with Gwyneth Paltrow’s trainer, and Paltrow when into business with her trainer to open several gyms, so it could have been a motivating factor.

I like the Human League mashup by the way, it doesn’t sound like it mashed at all.

Linda November 4, 2010 at 6:40 am

She definitely has fitness dialed in. At 52, her leaness is probably a place where she has settled – fits her goals and her lifestyle.

As for comments like this”scary veiny arms gym” and this “Madonna has a nasty, steriod-injected body that is no where close to the aesthetic any women is looking for” I would add my perspective. I don’t work out to look good for others. I work out for health and fitness – veiny arms come with the territory as that is where I am least likely to store fat. Bigger picture here gents.

Katie @ Run For the Bikini November 4, 2010 at 7:43 am

Maybe I can get a training job there(working on certification right now), if they open one near me 😀

River Rance November 4, 2010 at 7:44 am

the photo of madonna was “shopped”… madonna wanted to sue … etc…she looks not so beautiful…she looks like most 52 year olds that don’t take care of themselves…however she is vascular.. http://tinyurl.com/266q4mv

Clement November 4, 2010 at 8:14 am

Hey, Rusty and guys.

I’m actually pleased that Madonna’s opening another gym. I’m guessing you guys actually prefer training in a gym that suits your needs and most commercial gyms actually have that. Also, I think that any gym is a good place to be in and we should look at this with cautious optimism. As for Madonna’s sometimes overly lean figure, I’m in admiration of that. As you said, it takes an extreme amount of determination to be able to get to that state. I, myself, have never been that ripped to the point that striations can be seen on the arms. Perhaps that would be my next challenge!

The problem with Mexico is that there is a long range between the social, economic status, the very rich guy an the very poor guy, I lived there for 16 years I have Mexican heritage, many people thing Mexicans are the ones who clean the restrooms or cut the grass here in the US but actually here are some facts, Mexico city is the city where most Ferrari cars are located in one place, the richest man in the world is from Mexico, and people from there lives over there and almost never come to the US only for vacations, Bosques de las Lomas is a very good zone in Mexico city there are house around 10 m, and I like that cultured people that have travel know that places like Mexico city, acapulco, Cancun are very very good places to invest, can’t travel? read more.

Thomas -Waist Hips and Thighs November 4, 2010 at 10:23 am

Like you said Rusty at times she does appear to be a little too lean especially for a woman. I think women should have some softness to them and not showing their veins. To me its just a little overboard but this can be cured if she cuts back on the low calorie days and workouts less.

Of with that being said for a person over 50 she looks great!! Heck she looks better than a lot of 25 year old women. As far as the gym I think its a great idea. If she can get more people motivated to workout I’m all for it and she’ll make money in the process (of course that’s what she’s looking for).

Fitness Training Programs November 4, 2010 at 10:43 am

I have mixed emotions about this. I think people fall into fads strictly based on celebrity endorsements. I think this will be one as people will flock to it because it is endorsed by Madonna. It does have a positive impact as more people will get into working out but how many will stick with it after the shine wears off? I know this sounds negative but perhaps madonna can tell people what exercise has done for her such as anti aging, avoiding health issues, etc. This would be more beneficial than just banking on her star power.

I live in Mexico City and I can tell you it’s surreal. Differences are huge among people and the conditions we all live, from super rich people (who live in neighbourhoods like Bosques de las Lomas) to starving people who live in ratholes. About the traffic: HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. Anyway, I personally love the chaos, theres always something to do. And I have never been mugged, so, if you ask me, it’s a safe place. It’s a shame though that bosques it’s so far away from me, and with the traffic it just isn’t practical to work out there. I do 15-20 min of HIIT on a regular basis at home and that’s it. I would love to go to the opening, maybe i’ll catch a glimpse of her =)

Seth November 4, 2010 at 11:53 am

I am a member of 24 hour but if I had the money to afford it, I would go to Lifetime fitness because it looks like a roman temple. So the look is important. So is this Hard candy going to be a gym or a night club? You have to guess that there will be a ton of people turned off by the idea because it’s too intimidating. When I was a bit younger I never went into abercrombie & fitch because the loud music and it seemed as if you had to look like a model before you could even go into the place. We will have to see just what it has in store for people.

Missy November 4, 2010 at 12:48 pm

whenever i see ppl 50+, i notice that any extra flesh/fat they have tends to sag. so is that why madonna stays so lean? to avoid extra saggy flesh? is it possible to have a little extra chub when you are older & NOT have it sag? is this offset by being in great shape?

RezH November 4, 2010 at 12:53 pm

As far as ideal female body, I would go with the chick from bodyrock.tv. I keep seeing comments from guys who like their woman “softer”. WTF? Personally, I love the lean. Not veiny lean, but enough to see a six pack anyway.

As far as gyms go, as long as there is a power rack and some heavy kettlebells, I’m good. Deadlifting platform with bumper plates is optional.

Kelly-Fitness Overhaul November 4, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I think it’s great that Madonna is opening a line of gyms. Like any commercial gym, it will have stuff that you like and use and a bunch of equipment that you do not use. I like the atmosphere of a gym at times, which is why I train in a gym sometimes and at home sometimes. She has such a major influence on a percentage of the population and I think this will help to spread awareness about getting in shape. If someone goes to her gym just because it’s Madonna’s gym, I say good. At least it gets them off of their ass and in to the gym.

As for people criticizing her look or saying that it is all photoshop, big deal! She looks good for her age, maybe not as good as the pictures make it look like, but still better than the majority of people in their fifties. I give her credit for keeping herself in great shape and continuing to train instead of letting her age have its way with her. I am amazed to see the public backlash at successful people when they try and do something. The sad part is that there is a percentage of people that want to see her fail at this for no other reason than that she is successful and a celebrity.

I hope she succeeds and brings another place for people to train and get in incredible shape in to as many cities as she can. I would never want to see anyone fail at anything that they try and achieve. There are so many people that sit on their ass and don’t have the guts to try something, only to criticize someone when they stick their necks out to achieve their own dreams. We need more risk takers and less armchair quarterbacks!

Good luck Madonna and anyone else that is striving to achieve something new in their life.

Hey Rusty,

I think it’s a great thing for Madonna to be opening a gym chain. I am sure it will be heavily promoted so I am all for a bigger spread of awareness to work out and get fit.

The name sounds a bit funny though, in Melbourne Australia there is a hardcore and notorious rave club called Hard Candy so it might be weird if it ever comes down under to have a rave club and gym chain with the same name.

Cool mashups too, I didn’t know these even existed.

Howard - Energia Fitness November 5, 2010 at 8:57 am

Hey Rusty

Not a massive Madonna music fan but I think she has been a fantastic fitness icon for our generation and although she does tend to get too lean sometimes when she gets it right she looks great. She is not a classic beauty but got bags of sex appeal.
Regarding the gyms the word candy sounds like they are more female orientated so as a red blooded male I bet they are a great place to work out!!
You mentioned in your post that you think gyms have huge room for improvement and I would be interested to know what areas you are talking about if you get chance. I am really interested to see how gyms develop over the next 20-30 years as we age as a population and whether this older market will dominate how gyms are developed and run.
Love the tracks by the way and I was inspired to look for more similar mash ups. This is another depeche mode/madonna track but is from their early hits. Lots of synthesizer and electronic drums, gotta love it.

Ray - Six Pack Abs Diet November 5, 2010 at 12:09 pm

From a business standpoint I think it’s a good move for Madonna to open a gym and brand it. She’s an icon who happens to be lean & fit (always has been, but I agree with Rusty … she’s a little to lean IMO) at an age when many are not. I doubt she will have a problem drawing paying members. I’m a little surprised by the location though – I would think with the depressed commercial real estate market, that she would grab a lease on a property in the LA or surrounding area. But from a fitness standpoint, I would have zero interest in joining/working out at a celebrity gym.

As far as her music goes, my favorite Madonna cut is ‘Justify My Love’. That was a serious dance/party track! I snapped up the remix as soon as it came out and created my own DJ mix from the different versions of the song.

I would be interested in a gym with some Beautiful People as members as my gyms are mostly full of dudes.

R.W. November 6, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Hi Rusty,
My sister is a tall blonde scandinavian girl who lived in Mexico City for 5 years in her early 20s. She never had any problems beyond cat-calls. The cat calls were over the top! Even cops would do it. However, mexican men seem to have a very funny and old school view of women. It’s ok to ogle them, but if they get called on it they are very embarrassed and apologetic. One time my sister laid into a cop in spanish and it will probably be the only time I’ll ever see a dude holding a machine gun looking down at his shoes and apologizing in spanish.

Mexico City is pretty safe. Until the devaluation of the peso in 1995, year after year it was ranked the safest megacity in the world. However, it’s also huge and chaotic , with super rich neighborhoods and super poor neighborhoods. So… you never know what could happen. I mostly hung out in places like Coyocan and around UNAM and I thought those parts were cool and never had any problems.

Hard Candy Fitness.. definitely a weird name when it comes to fitness, but I can see where it’s coming from.

However it would be nice to have one here in montreal right in downtown. It would definitely be a smash.. especially if their gyms has a Madonna’s music feel.

Ian - HomeWorkoutBlog November 6, 2010 at 10:59 pm

Madonna is hot. Period.

I have always liked how she kept her gap tooth grin, in a world of cookie-cutter braces-induced dental perfection.

Anyways, I have no doubt that she will be successful with her new venture. I am sure she has thoroughly consulted the Kabbalah for business advice!

Tímea from the block November 7, 2010 at 10:48 am

Kelly , you are totally right. It is just lazy and good for nothing people who like to gossip about what might be better than the best.
It is just easier to talk someone off , than try to achieve what he or she had achieved. It is always easier for the foolish to criticise something useful and good. So this idea of a Madonna like candy gym is nice , maybe too expensive for a lot of people, but nice, and contact me those who can do that after her.If you succeed, than you can ask me anything. But you will never get that i am sure.

I have moved from Los Angeles to help open up Hard Candy in Mexico City, and I must say, the area is beautiful. Bosques is a reminder of Beverly Hills. I moved from West Hollywood to Distrito Federal, and Bosques is definitely a great reminder from where I moved from. Wish us luck as we get ready to open this one-of-a-kind gym.

Stephen - Ireland Gym Reviews November 8, 2010 at 12:39 pm

As long as the gym has good equipment and value for money i thing Madonnas gym chains are good. Plus she is obviously in good shape herself so that is a plus for marketing her business.

Its good to see that she is expanding into mexico also and not just sticking to her home country.

Jason - Core Routine November 9, 2010 at 1:07 am

I have to give it to her she is a smart business lady. She has been around for some time and has always been successful.

It will be interesting to see how things turn out.

Jeremy & Kim November 12, 2010 at 4:00 am

We find it interesting that she is heading out on this venture at all. Gyms are not an easy business to make lucrative so it seems to us that she must have a real passion for helping people get into shape. Otherwise, why the headache? She is being smart by teaming up with Mark Mastrov and if she really is passionate about helping people in this way (globally!!) then more power to her.

Do you think she’ll open one up in Addis Ababa? 😉

I’ve already bookmarked your post because I love Madonna!

I have to agree with the people who think that Madonna is in great shape for her age. I mean, come on, how many people look like her when they’re in their fifties? I know some, but not too many.

I like the Madonna vs Depeche Mode mashup! But still I would prefer to listen to them separately! 😀

It seems that a lot of companies and people are avoiding Mexico at the moment due to the over-sensationalism in the media about the violence and the drug wars. Although I have never really liked Madonna, kudos to her for starting her enterprise in Mexico City. I am sure it is a cool and interesting city, and it is good to hear some good news coming from this region. I hope the business is successful.

adam November 15, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Talk about looking good for your age.

[email protected] November 19, 2010 at 1:27 pm

We’re the same age. I certainly cannot sing, and you would not want to test this claim! But, like her, I believe we can keep our mind and bodies in good shape throughout our lives.

I never miss a day with my yoga, or Five Tinetan Rites, I weigh the same as I did in my twenties, but I am certainly nowhere near as ‘ripped’ as Maddona and never have been, even when I was into gymnastics as a teenager…actually back then I was more The Olga Korbut build…

That gives my age away, even if I was trying to hide it.

I believe an ageless feeling is a good one to go for!

I think it is a essential to be in good shape yourself if you are in the fitness or weight loss industry. It is surprising how many people advise on weight loss, who cannot control their own To me it would be like visiting an accountant that was hopeless at figures (or a la Monty Python, a lion tamer)

When I was reading Barry Groves’ fab book, Natural Health and Weight Loss, he mentions seeing the founder of Slimming World being interviewed on TV, and, according to Barry, she was obese! Apparently, she had one of her co-ordinators with her, who was also obese.

So Maddona certainly has the right image and I’m sure she’ll be succesfull…when isn’t she, and good for her. I wish her every success.

Well I am surprised the Madonna would set up a gym in Mexico. Maybe pleasantly surprised since Mexico has a huge population that is becoming more and more health consious and is also interested in looking fit and feeling great.
Bosque de las Lomas or “Las Lomas,” as is most commonly known by residents of Mexico City, is the equivalent of Bel- Air and is a neighborhood where politicians and celebrities live. So I guess she is catering to right group of people by setting up shop in this neighborhood.

Aaron Curl November 28, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Wow, you are a really negative person. How do you know all these things? Madonna is awesome, quit dissing. You know, some people do actually do put in hard work and care about their bodies. Why do humans do this to each other? Why do we judge? Jealousy?

No BS Muscle Building Secrets November 30, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Respect to Madonna!

What is she, 45 now? She is still hot…

Plus she has those sexy gapped teeth like the true pseudo-euro she is. No lame, cookie cutter straight and perfect teeth for her… she rocks what God gave her.

As far as putting a gym in Mexico City, well, I hope she hires a few good security guards!

I picked up a copy of London’s Evening Standard Paper on the way home this week and read about Madonna’s first opening in Mexico City. At first I was thinking..Here she goes again but really instead of being jealous that she has the drive and funds to do this, I thought if it gets more people fit and healthy then it’s a good thing!!So good on her and lets hope it succeeds (no doubt it will!)

Forever the entrepreneur. I think it is great! But hopefully she doesn’t incorporate the same business model as 24 Hour Fitness.

Trevor Somerville December 28, 2010 at 8:20 pm

It seems like a lot of celebritys are coming out with there own gyms which I think is a good thing if there promoting exercise and health, but I don’t think ” Hard Candy ” would be my first choice 😉

Is that fitness center ever coming to the Washington DC area? i’m trying to do some ab workouts

Anthony April 8, 2011 at 11:09 am

Hard Candy is also opening in Russia.

Modern Russia just posted an interview featuring Mark Mastrov discussing the future opening of Madonna’s Hard Candy Fitness Centers in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the interview, he discusses why the fitness center is expanding in Russia, the Russian culture’s views on fitness and the Russian business market.
