Here's the thing. Bodybuilding is not just about looking like Ronnie. Anybody that works out and tries to looks great is considered a bodybuilder. They are a bunch of categories and Ronnie was the part of the heavy weight. Is like boxing or MMA...it's not a free for all...they are categories.

Now Jay talks about what he eats. That man has a nutritionist that gets paid more than 7K/person a year and I'm sure that is just from normal people. Now 7K not seem like a lot but think what if he has 20-30 clients. Yeah now it seems like a lot of money. They know their stuff and why they eat what they eat. Diets change left and right according to what you want to do.

Now lets talk about people's favorite subject...STEROIDS. Steroids is not some joke and it's not just injection. These guy know what they inject, how to inject, and the chemistry behind it. They get blood works left and right. They have doctor looking after them. There is Steroids, GH, Peptides, SARMs, and a billion other things. Hell even pro-hormones that are sold in supplement stores are steroids in caps(no seriously they are steroids)! If those chemicals killed them and gave them a billion problems then they would not live such a long time. Most bodybuilders live a LONG life and they look and feel great. Joints feel good, stamina, LIBIDO(even when they are 60+), sleep...everything!

Then there is why they do it. You grow to love it. I mean your changing all the time while other people still look the same or worst. You get stronger, faster, leaner, bigger. It's just amazing! You don't have to be huge to lift big(look up john inzer)...do you know how satisfying it is to lift hundreds of pounds?

Most people just respond with "What's the point of doing all this?!" which kind of is an annoying comment. Because think about it...what is the point of football, basket ball, driving 100mph, hell what is the point of giving 55 orgasm(28 was cumming and 45 of them were back-to-back) to a female? It's fun! Now the last part was about me and it might sound impassible but its not. And no, no toys or anything were used. I just treated it like workout...let get one more.

This post rules.
I read articles in Mens Health, Books and some blogs that only work for getting big and bulky and not lean and muscular, this is the best site that i have visited.
For that guys who said that getting muscular and big rules think it again, studies have shown that women didnt feel attracted for bodybuilder or powerlifters, because bodybuilders look very big (overdone), and sometimes scary, and power lifters very fat and bulky.
They usually preffer the rusty approach lean, muscular attractive look that we see in the magazines and the movies.
If that bodybuilders and power lifting guys didnt belive me ask any women if they feel attracted for bulky guys or lean and muscular body

Thanks for everithing rusty

oh and btw, the majority of bodybuilders find Ronnie Coleman in his later years "picture above" to be disgusting. It's the IFBB judges that cause this kind of catastrophe to come about. Most bodybuilders want to look Big, but also athletic, like a modern Hercules.

When I was 14 my brother died of brain tumor that he had been battling for around 5 years, because of this my life was filled with stress and I learned to eat to make myself feel better. After my brother died I lost weight, but was still skinny fat and disgusted with myself. At around 16 years old I started to go bald "probably related to extreme stress while watching my brother die". During this period I was picked on, people always pointed out how weak I was "couldn't bench the bar in PE class" and my hairloss also subjected me to ridicule. Until I was 18 years old I thought about committing suicide everyday. 18 was when I started bodybuilding, I told myself that if I was going to be bald, I was still going to be attractive. I followed this path and completely dedicated myself 100%, and at 21yrs old I'm very strong "squatted 305 for 13 reps ass to ankles this week" and weigh 225 lbs, fairly lean.

What I'm trying to say is I would have killed myself if I hadn't discovered bodybuilding, yea it takes over your life, but to me it's invaluable and everyday I'm thankful that I didn't kill myself and that I found bodybuilding. There are many many aesthetically pleasing bodybuilders such as denis sergovskiy.

So while you may not 'like' bodybuilding please remember that there are people like me out there, and when I hear someone say that bodybuilding makes their stomach sick it hurts..

As a competitive bodybuilder, I have to say the author sounds like he's grinding an axe. Possibly a bodybuilder stole his woman or he got beat out of something by a bodybuilder. I personally hate the skinny 160 lb lean look. Not enough beef, kinda like a .50 cent hamburger.

Train heavy at all times, the more muscle you have on you the faster your metabolism will be. You will look younger, you will be stronger. Lifting light doesn't accomplish much.

The truth about steroids is that no one person had ever died from steroid use by itself. They likely were pre-dispositioned to have other medical issues or they had other unhealthy vices. The anti-steroid media had done a great job of BS'ing just about everyone.

I enjoyed your article. Truthfully, it's all a matter of personal preference. I'm fit, not quite a bodybuilder, but I lift heavy and enjoy it. My physique is nowhere near Cutler's or Coleman's but I admire these two men greatly. They are at the top of their game in a sport that has changed many lives for the better.

True, those people in the last picture look healthy. But once you have an eye for a well-chiseled & cut physique, you can't help but notice it - or the lack of it - on people wherever you go. Like for example, if I saw those five models on the beach somewhere, I would consider the girl on the left undernourished and the guy next to him a little doughy around the pecs section. The girl way on the right appears to be masking the beginnings of a champagne stomach (or is that a little bambino coming into the picture?).

My next immediate thought would be "wow...just a little resistance training and they would look great."

Just my thoughts, but again, it's personal preference. Once you see a well-cut physique, you can never go back again.

What is the point of this article? To me it seems to be just bashing bodybuilding. If you dont like the bodybuilding lifestyle then dont live that way, nobody is saying you have to follow any bodybuilding principles. I like to live that lifestyle because it gives me complete control over what i will look like (And that is what bodybuilding is about, looks). Me along with any other bodybuilders love doing what we do. Also not all bodybuilders are on steroids. How about natural bodybuilders. Yes all pro bodybuilders like ronnie are but that doesnt mean they haven't worked there A$$ off for years. Im actually more of a fan of a physique like Flex Wheelers.
And for all fellow bodybuilders lets continue to LIVE LARGE!

Bodybuilding is very demanding and big muscles are the objective when you have that wimp beside the great Ron Coleman who is the alpha male and make out that the wimpy look is better you obviously don,t train. You say oh it is the steroids they don't look good they are too big don't kid yourselves women like tall men they like muscular men. Not men that look 18. You are all a bunch of clowns.

What I like about Arango is that his cheat is well developed and defined but it's flat. I really don't understand how men can desire big round chests. It makes them look like women. No really, it looks like they have boobs. In my opinion a man chest should be ripped but flat, not round and protuding.

I am in agreement with you totally. I only lift weights for fitness and a bit of muscle, not for anything else. I also do not think bodies like Ronnie Coleman look natural, at all.

Life is all about choosing the middle way and moderation is always the key to real happiness.

Steroid using, protein shake guzzling bodybuilding dorks everywhere do certainly perpetuate the extreme stereotype that you illustrate in this article. And, of course, who wouldn't rather look like the bulemic model than the steroid freak monster? You create quite a contrast with these two photos that unfairly groups natural bodybuilders with the dorks and freaks. what about natural, organic, drug-free bodybuilders like me Rusty? I am not big and bulky and I do not scream and throw dumbbells around the gym or use supplements of any kind. I respect all types of athletes and fitness philosophies and my training reccomendations are goal specific for each individual. It is a brilliant marketing approach to debunk bodybuilding as you have done with your site with great success but I want people to know that not all bodybuilders are the same and that I love the information on this site and think bodyweight training and cardio is great for most people. I just don't care for the resentful tone against "all things bodybuilding". I don't like those arrogant steroid guys either.

This post has some truth to it but again using Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler as an example of bodybuilding is very misleading. Some people who take up "bodybuilding" will never get that big, or probably even want to get big. You are using very, very, poor examples of bodybuilding. If you look at the REAL bodybuilders before arnolds time, they were stronger, healthier, and more aesthetic than todays. Steve Reeves, reg park....

Rusty,

Great site, you truly have a wealth of knowledge. That being said, please do not discount some of the advantages of bodybuilding. I'm 37 now but competed regionally and almost made it nationally. I did two "cycles" in my early tewnties, so for the most part I did natural bodybuilding. There is a case to be made for putting on an efficient amount of mass in your early teens to mid twenties for benefits later in life i.e. bone density, more muscle mass for fat burning, HgH release, easy recall on muscle memory, etc. I agree with you on todays movement however, the copious amounts of drugs that the early 1990s to present day National BB's consume is mind boggling, it is the reason I got out. Today I concentrate on a mixture of powerlifting, HIIT, power walking, 5k and 10k's and medium range outdoor biking. I strive to attain about 30g of protein every 3 hours with low to medium carbs and healthy fats, but I'm not a zombie or consumed by my diet like alot of people think bodybuilders are, my prep takes about 20 minutes the night before, thats it. In my opinion, the ideal physique would be a Herschel Walker or Bo Jackson type. High Sprinter type muscle, around 7 to 8% bodyfat, high cardio conditioning and above average VO2 max, you get the best of both worlds with aerobic and anaerobic condtioning. I know this could vary on each individual depending on percentage of fast and slow twitch, but just what I feel is ideal.

A little warning on HIIT, I find it one of the most effective ways to train, however it is very easy to overtrain, especially for people in thier 30's and up. After training for awhile you will develop an intuitiveness about when your body is ready for another round but on the safe side keep it 48 hours in between sessions minimum.

Rusty, I find your site intriguing and also commend on you on the time you put into this site. Also the unselfishness that you bring to the table, you truly do want people to live healthier and happy lives and I see that you have helped multitudes.
