Up and Coming Fitness Blogs – The "Next Generation" of Talent

There are some new blogs that offer tremendous advice, but are so new that they aren't getting the traffic they deserve. I hate to see great content go to waste, since you will not find these sites in Google yet. I simply want to give these hard working people a pat on the back for a job well done. More importantly, I want to recommend a few sites that I believe will be well worth your time.

I Can't List Every Fitness Blog That I'm a Fan of…

Within the next few weeks…I'm going to create an exhaustive list of blogs that I read and categorize them in a way that will help you find info on an exact topic. I'll list my favorite women's blogs, my favorite nutition blogs, my favorite muscle building blogs, etc. This post will just feature a few (out of the many) newer blogs I'm a fan of.

What Makes Me a Fan of a Particular Fitness Blog and Fitness Blogger?

A Unique "Angle" or Methodology: I don't want to read a list of facts or just a rehash of common fitness knowledge. My time is limited, so I only spend time on sites that "bring something to the table".

A Visible Personality Behind the Site: One of the first things I do when hitting a blog is go to their "About Me" page. I prefer to see pictures, but a good Bio works as well. I like sites where the author's unique voice and writing style stands out.

Entertainment: I want to learn in an entertaining way. Videos, pictures, and a bit of humor helps. If a site reads like a textbook, then I quickly move on to the next site. I prefer sites with personal stories about actual experiences as well.

Clean Site Design: Too many ads or gizmos make a site hard to read. The content should be easily accessible. Many sites are just overly complicated in my opinion.

Here Are the New Fitness Blogs That I Highly Recommend

Zen to Fitness: Chris uses a simple "zen-like" approach to his posts. He takes complex ideas and breaks them down in an easy to read format. He realizes that people are pressed for time and gets right to the point in posts. The entire site is "water tight" with no fluff.

Gym Junkies: This is a blog tied to a workout "How to" site. It has a bunch of great how-to videos, solid posts, and it is obviously organized content (you will see what I mean when you hit the blog). Vic and Justin have done a wonderful job with this site!

Go Healthy Go Fit: Andrew is the hardest working fitness blogger on the internet. He posts AT LEAST once per day and picks great topics. What I like about his posts is that he reads a lot of the same blogs that I do and expands upon the ideas presented by those sites. I can quickly find out what is happening in the fitness blog world by visiting his site.

I Will Feature 3 More In a Month or Two…

I didn't want to make a list of the dozen+ new blogs I'm reading (that is just information overload). I wanted to recommend 3 unique blogs that I really enjoy. You will get a lot out of these sites and they are posting great content like crazy. They are unique from each other and different than this site.

I Will Get a Unique Post Out Soon

Sorry I haven't been posting as much…I have been busier than normal this Holiday season at work. I can't wait to get back to giving out tips to help you guys shape up from the Holidays (if you let yourself go that is).

Note: If you like any of these sites, then subscribe to their RSS feed. It is as simple as entering your e-mail address. The number of subscribers a blog has is one measure of how popular a blog is. My subscription box is in the upper right hand corner…hint hint :)

I have recently started reading through Chris' blog and I must say that he really puts a lot of effort in it. Glad you are supporting those guys, Rusty!

Some good blogs you listed! I agree, there are so many awesome new blogs out there. I find a new one I didn't know about almost every day.

A lot of these newer blogs get hits just by leaving links to their blogs in your comments section: I've been on all three of these already just from seeing them comment here and they are great. I especially like Chris' Zen approach to being fit. Looking forward to another post like this and maybe a blog or two that I haven't been on yet!

Hi Rusty. Interesting you wrote about blogs. My wife owns a Merle Norman Cosmetic Boutique and we have created a blog in our webpage (www.merlenormanofwestchase.com) were she addresses health and beauty. I think, in a way, that her blog and yours have similarities. You want people to work out without following the trends of body building getting a more "natural look", and she wants women to enhance their beauty without the "new clinical procedures". We have noticed that women are working out like maniacs in order to look physically great but, when it comes to their faces, you have two groups: the ones who think they don't need makeup because they have a great body and, the ones who inject into their faces whatever is out on the market. Our blog goes against both groups but specially against the ones who spend tons of dollars in Botox, Collagen, etc.. I know this has nothing to do with what you write, but if you have a minute in your busy schedule, browse through our webpage and check our blog (you have a girlfriend). I would like to know what you think.

It's an excellent idea Rusty, there's a lot of good info in the internet, and SEO isn't always easy, and lots of times good stuff is never read. This will help a lot those who have good blogs, but aren't visible yet.

Hey Rusty,

This is a great honor to be listed with guys like Chris, Vic and Justin! I'm a big fan of their sites. I just want to say thank you for all your guidance and unbelievable information. The Fitness Black Book should be required reading for any new fitness blogger out there!

All the Best,

Yavor,

Digging your site as well. I see you are posting a lot more frequently than you used to. Very cool!

Son of Grok,

I just went over to your site and saw your home gym video. I like the chinup bar you made from parts from Home Depot. That is a nice setup!

Yash,

I find most of these guys in the comment section as well. Many of these guys have been leaving comments for quite a while. I do my best and try to comment on others blogs as well…it helps create a community feel. You will notice that most of the guys who comment don't have typical "bodybuilding" type sites. This is key, because those are VERY easy to find online. The guys and girls who comment here typically endorse the slim, lean and functionally fit physique. I just want to highlight these great blogs in groups of 3, to really point the readers to great content.

Cheers!

Rusty

I recently got into those blogs as well. All great. I would also recommend Leangains. http://www.leangains.com
It is not constantly updated but the author is very knowledgeable and works with various clients.

Thanks for the list Rusty. I'm a regular reader of 2 of the blogs you listed but Gym Junkies is new to me. I've added it to my RSS feed and look forward to a good read.

P.S. I know what you mean about being busier than ever at work. Bring on Wednesday

This is a great honor Rusty. I am really proud to be featured and mentioned alongside the other great fitness blogs that cropped up in 2008. Here's to a great 09 for the fitness community!

Vic,

I am very impressed by your blog. You are making me look bad! Awesome stuff buddy.

JE,

I enjoy Lean Gains as well…I just didn't include it because it isn't a newer blog. There are quite a few established blogs that I'm huge fans of ( IF Life, Modern Forager, Mark's Daily Apple, Better is Better, etc.).

Tom,

You have a nice site growing as well. I see you have a whole new theme going…looks good.

SoG,

I visit your blog every time you comment. It is such an eccentric and entertaining site.

Chris,

Mike O'Donnell (IF Life) and Scott Kustes (Modern Forager) both dig your site as well. You have a bright future.

Excited for 09'

I love that you are giving "props" to hard working bloggers! Being a blogger myself, I know the struggles all too well. If you have time, check out my blog called "Fit Tip Daily." I write new articles everyday and it's always evolving.

Great list Rusty, I agree 110%. Those 3 guys put in hard work, have great content and I know will have more great stuff to come in 2009. Give yourself a pat on the back as well….as your blog is tops in my book!

Great sites Rusty – thanks for posting. There's a lot of good stuff here.

SB said:

Hey, this is not on topic: I'd like to check out your archived posts. How do I look at archives for particular months, rather than just a few "categories"? I don't see any archives here, nor is there a "previous posts" button at the bottom. So how do I scroll backwards through stuff I haven't read yet?

Adria,

I can tell you are hitting it hard as well. Keep up the good work.

Mike,

Thanks buddy. Obviously I think your blog is outstanding. Couldn't list you Scott K. or Mark S. because you all of you guys have established high traffic blogs like this site. I can't wait to see which of the newest bloggers take their sites to the next level.

Brian,

This is fun very rewarding. I'm sure these 3 bloggers would agree.

SB,

This blog theme is slightly broken and has been the past 6 months. I have a lot of content that people probably can't access. I am in the process of chosing a new theme, but haven't found one I like. This is the most "old school" blogging theme ever! It will be nice when I am able to have archives and all of the regular ways to look up old content. It will feel like a brand new site. Thanks for being patient :)

Cheers,

Rusty

How do you feel about the information out there about "cardio". I know you are big on it. I am too, but it seems like it's becomming more of a gray area in fitness. Do you use any of the other cardio machines?

Brian said:

So you've been blogging since 07 huh? That's cool man, shows some consistency. I finished an 8 week program the first part of December that tore me up (here's my 8 week sequence before and afters) http://www.upwithfitness.com. I lost about 10 pounds of fat, and got quite a lot stronger and toned, but since then I have slipped into the feasting mindset, what with the Holidays and all.

I'm excited to get vamped up again come January 1st. My wife and I just had another baby (well, my wife had the baby I should say) but we're going to start a program together and see if we can lose a few lbs, get stronger, more toned and ENJOY LIFE!!

Best,

Brian Lund

Rusty,
Long time reader, first time poster.

I have to recommend Keith Norris's TheorytoPractice.com. I found your site indirectly through his, and he embraces most of the same principles you do, with a fresh outlook on fitness and a good deal of realistic 'how to survive the carb-infested world' type advice.

My blog is awesome of course too, but I really just post my workouts. Not a whole lot of deep and insightful stuff to be found.

And I'm dumb. Keith's blog is actually at Theorytopractice.wordpress.com.

About the topic in fitness, yes we all know that fitness is really healthy to our body, but the most effective way to have a slim and healthy body is to drink water. Yes water is very important to our body right? because it flushes out the wastes from the body and moisturizes the skin. well now! an effective way to be fit is drinking water, if we are refering to water always remembre that because water is no plurarity, the Borba water has a supplement water provide antioxidant antiaging effects. Which is other well-known healthty drinks.

admin said:

Samantha,

Certainly water is important, I just wouldn't say it is the main reason behind getting fit. I probably could use a bit more water, mainly for the health reasons and to flush out my system a bit.
