I've wanted to do an exercise and diabetes post for a long time now. I am by no means an expert on diabetes, but I wanted to research and put up a post on this important subject. More importantly, I would like people to comment and hopefully point to more resources about diabetes and exercise. My goal is that over time, the comment section on this particular post will grow into a nice resource on the topic. There are so many bright readers and contributors that I would love to see this happen.

Exercise and Diabetes

[It would be great if we could help some people kick diabetes butt. Even if this post simply helps people control their diabetes...that would be cool.]

I wanted to do a post about having the symptoms of the common cold and whether you should still exercise or take a break entirely. With the weather beginning to cool down and seasons changing in much of the world, many people tend to get a bit sick. If this happens to you are you going to workout just as hard, back off a bit, or skip your workout entirely? I always had a hunch of the right thing to do, but never had any scientific research to back this up. Well I just stumbled across a study that backs up my beliefs on working out while having a cold.

It has been shown that being obese can increase risk of an early death by 2 to 3 times, but what about being just a little overweight? In my day to day life I see many examples of people who are just a little overweight. In fact, I would guess that at least 1/3 of the people I know who are over the age of 50 fit into this category. I have found a few studies that show that being overweight increases the risk for several life threatening diseases.

[I love seeing older people who are full of energy and goofing around, like this couple. Honestly, there is no reason to grow up and act like an elderly person is "suppose to". I say no to all of that! I am aiming for 40-50 more years of fun and excitement.]

I'm more of a beer guy than a wine guy. I know it is supposedly sophisticated to love wine, but I do prefer a cold beer. That being said, I'm slowly introducing wine into my diet. I've realized that it doesn't have to be an "either or" situation. I can enjoy a moderate amount of both beer and wine. It seems that each year scientists are finding an increasing amount of health benefits in red wine. This year all the excitement is about a substance in wine called "resveratrol".

[I plan on visiting Greece, Italy, France, Croatia, Spain, Portugal and many other countries where drinking wine is a way of life. It would be a shame to be exposed to great wine and not really appreciate what I am drinking. Because of this, I have decided to learn more about wine in my spare time.]
